If you've been paying 2.5–3.5% in credit card processing fees every month, you've probably asked yourself: is there a way to stop paying these fees entirely? The answer is yes — and it's called a cash discount program.

Cash discount is one of the most popular programs we set up for merchants across the Rio Grande Valley. Restaurants, salons, contractors, and retail shops are eliminating their processing fees entirely. Here's everything you need to know.

What Is a Cash Discount Program?

A cash discount program is a pricing strategy where your listed prices already include the cost of credit card processing. Customers who pay with a card pay the posted price. Customers who pay with cash receive a discount — typically 3–4% — bringing the price down.

The result: the cost of accepting credit cards is no longer your expense. It's absorbed into the price, and cash customers save money for paying with cash.

Simple example: Your haircut is posted at $25. That already includes the 3.99% service fee. A customer paying by card pays $25. A customer paying with cash gets a discount — they pay $24.00.

Is Cash Discount Legal?

Yes — cash discount programs are federally legal under the Durbin Amendment and permitted in all 50 states. The key requirement is transparency: you must clearly post your prices and disclose that a discount is available for cash payments. Proper signage is provided as part of the setup.

Cash discount is not the same as surcharging — surcharging adds a fee at checkout, which has more restrictions. Cash discount programs price card payments into the posted price from the start, which is fully compliant.

How Much Can You Actually Save?

Processing fees typically run 2.5%–3.5% of every card transaction. On a business doing $30,000/month in card volume, that's $750–$1,050 per month — or up to $12,600 per year going straight to the processor. With a cash discount program, the vast majority of that goes back in your pocket.

Monthly Card VolumeTypical Fees PaidSavings with Cash Discount
$10,000$250–$350/mo$250–$350/mo
$25,000$625–$875/mo$625–$875/mo
$50,000$1,250–$1,750/mo$1,250–$1,750/mo
$100,000$2,500–$3,500/mo$2,500–$3,500/mo

How Does It Work at the Point of Sale?

With Clover and our CardConnect processing platform, cash discount is built directly into the POS system. Here's how the transaction flows:

  1. Your menu, shelf tags, or service prices are set at the cash discount price (the lower cash amount)
  2. When a customer selects card payment, the system automatically adds the service fee to bring it to the full price
  3. The fee is clearly displayed on the screen and receipt before the customer confirms
  4. The customer taps or swipes — the transaction completes
  5. You receive the full posted price, and the processing cost is covered

Customer experience: Most customers are familiar with the concept from gas stations, which have been doing cash vs. card pricing for decades. When it's displayed clearly and professionally, the vast majority of customers accept it without issue.

Who Is Cash Discount Best For?

Cash discount works best for businesses where customers have a choice between cash and card, and where the transaction is face-to-face. It's an especially good fit for:

  • Restaurants and food trucks — High volume, thin margins, frequent cash customers
  • Auto shops and contractors — Large tickets where even 3% is significant
  • Salons and barber shops — Regulars often switch to cash once they understand the savings
  • Retail shops — Especially those in markets or areas with regular cash customers
  • Service businesses — Cleaning, landscaping, pest control, etc.

What Equipment Do You Need?

Any Clover device running through CardConnect supports cash discount natively. The Clover Flex, Clover Mini, and Clover Station Duo are all popular choices for cash discount merchants. The program is configured at the account level — no extra hardware required beyond your standard terminal.

We also support cash discount through Dejavoo terminals for merchants who prefer a countertop PIN pad setup.

What Are the Downsides?

No program is perfect for everyone. Here's what to consider:

  • Some customers push back — particularly in higher-end establishments where it can feel off-brand. This is less of an issue in everyday businesses.
  • Online transactions — Cash discount works at the point of sale. For e-commerce, you'd use a different approach (like embedded payment pages).
  • Proper signage is required — You need clear disclosure at the entrance and point of sale. We provide compliant signage as part of setup.

Important: Some processors market "zero-fee" programs that are actually surcharge programs with different branding. Surcharging has different legal requirements and restrictions. Make sure you know which program you're being set up with.

How Do I Get Set Up?

Setup is straightforward. We review your current processing costs, configure your account for cash discount, set up your Clover terminal (or reprogram your existing one if compatible), and provide the required signage. The whole process typically takes less than a week from approval to live.
